In 2000 we started our fledgling beef operation with a Charlais/Beef Master cross heifer. She was bred by a Charlais bull in August 2000 and calved during April of 2001. With the birth of this calf, we began our cow-calf operation. We began buying, raising and finishing additional calves during the spring of 2001.

Our beef is raised and finished on grass, never grain. The result is a much leaner, nutritious beef that is healthier for us to consume. The Omega-3 fatty acids and CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) are present in a much higher level when a cow is raised on pasture. In recent studies, Omega-3 fatty acids and CLA has been shown to reduce coronary problems and the incidence of cancer.

We rotatate our cattle daily during the pasture growing season. This is accomplished by the use of a temporary electric fence that is set up and taken down each day. This approach is better for the pasture and is a more natural and healthy grazing pattern for the cattle. The pasture is improved by the short, intense grazing period. The grass is maintained in a much healthier state and is therefore the land is more resistent to erosion. The cattle are moved away from their manure and onto fresh, green pasture.

We do use a natural mineral supplement of kelp meal, DE (diatemacious earth) and mixing salt. We don't use unnecessary antibiotics and chemical wormers, and we only vaccinate for those life threatening diseases that are prevalent in the county in which we live.

During the dormant season for the grass, our cattle are fed hay cut and bailed from our own pasture. Our pasture include a mix of legumes and grasses that are all perennials and the cattle love it. We don't use herbicides and we don't use chemical fertilizer.

Remember that because our animals are moved daily to fresh green pastures, our beef is healthy, lean and is lower in fat and calories, but our beef is much higher in the essential fatty acid Omega-3. We believe that it is worth the extra labor to care for our beef!
